My Girlfriend purchased a new Honda Element and I'm getting sick of looking at the textured plastic panels. I've seen some pics from SEMA shows where the panels were painted and It looked pretty sweet. My question is this what is the correct way of getting rid of the texture. Do you sand it all off or just sand it part way and use filler primer over it. Also should I use some form of flex additive or adhesion promoter. I'm going to buy all new plastic panels as they are cheap due to the fact that I work at a honda dealership. I can post pics of the vehicle if needed but didn't want to post them unless necessary.

If the plastic is fairly thick I'd probably sand out the texture and finish off in about 600grit,then plastic prime it and shoot it.As long as you're using a modern BC/CC system you shouldn't need a flex additive as long as it's the same or stiffer than a car's urethane bumper.Should be much stiffer than that though.

THE STUFF SEEMS PRETTY THICK SO I FIGURED I COULD JUST SAND IT OUT. WHAT ABOUT MATCHING THE COLOR? DO YA THINK I CAN GET A CLOSE ENOUGH MATCH SO THE PANELS WILL LOOK GOOD? I'M JUST AFRAID THAT THE COLOR MAY BE OFF AND I'M NOT KEEN ON PAINTING THE WHOLE CAR. I'LL PROBABLY BE USING PPG BC/CC.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/foreheadslap.gif For some reason I was thinking bikes but it doesn't matter.Your best match will be to get a factorypack of the color, the factory has many more tints in the line than the paintstore will and it eliminates the human factor.Being a new car it should be very good.I don't know the imports that well but I don't think they have the variation problem near as bad as the US cars do.There might be a slight price difference but it's usually worth it for the match.
