I'm curious to hear your thoughts on how to achieve a 3 tone sunburst effect similar to this bass guitar

I don't need the woodgrain effect, although that might be cool. I figure this will have to be done with Kandies but not really sure how to get the black->red->orange effect.

Thanks in advance

Actually, you would not use Kandies to achieve sunburst and the easiest way is the way they did it in the old days... using Nitrocellulose Lacquer.

Spray the transluscent yellow first, then spray the red outline, then shoot the black or brown outer band.

The edges are done by spraying holding the gun in the middle of the body as it lays flat with the tip pointed just off the edge of the guitar.

If you really want to do it right, check out this site:

ReRanch Guitar Painting

There is a wealth of information on painting guitars... they also sell nitro lacquer that absolutely duplicates 50's and 60's Fender colors.

Good Luck,

Thanks for the info, but I guess I was unclear. I would like to reproduce this effect on a set of tanks and fenders on a bike.

You could do it the same as a guitar. Use the base color to get the amber center, fog a transparent red around the edges, then fog your black or brown around the outside edges. If you don't have an airbrush a touch up gun should be able to do a good job.

Might look nicer if you just do the teardrop instead of the outline of the whole tank. And for the fenders just do the centers instead of all the way down the sides.
