85 corvette paint problems

Hello everyone,

Im new here and somewhat new to painting and have an issue with the paint on my 85 corvette. I used to have paint bubbles under my black paint job. So I decided to sand them down. After i did i taped off the area and shot 2-3 layers of heavy spray can primer to cover all of the feathering up completly. Than i shot my 3 layers of black base coat and than 3 layers of clearcoat. When i took off the tape i had hardlines. After doing research i learned i SHOULDVE done rollback but i DIDNT so im looking for a solution for how to FIX this. Everything i look for on the internet everyone says shouldve done rollback. I tried sanding it all down agian with 800 and feathered those out smooth, than reshot black but the lines are still showing but you just cant feel them now.

Any helpful insight on how to fix this would be greatly appriciated.

Thank You,
Alex

I would resand ( and take alot of material off ) with 320 or 400 . Reprime with a automotive 2k primer , then fog coat , sand with 400 . The fog coat will show you and bad spots when sanding . If all looks good , back tape and apply base coat /clear coat . Take your time and good luck .

what area are you trying to repaint ? You cannot just do a spot and think its going to be flat you will have to do the whole panel to get that.
If I were you I would sand it all back down not all the way to metal and use a sealer to cover the bad paint and give a good foundation for your new paint again do the whole panel then when you sand the sealer(or not if its smooth)base and clear following the tech sheets for the products you have. you can fold the tape and do your rolled edge if you are close to a body line or inside of the door opening(you will still have a line just not as tall you will need to wet sand and buff it ).
Please do not use a aerosol spraycan to paint your car! it will be worse than what you already have or it will do exactly the same thing.(fall off your car)

also the lines will never go away as the blacks are two different colors (thats why painters use a technique called blending) or they spray the whole paneland hope the butt match is close enough.

if you want to learn mind as well be the right way.

Wydir, Actually a Corvette is mainly fiberglass

@Hixsonalex
I would suggest just sanding the area 'flat' (get rid of those lines). Sand the area bigger than the area you plan on blending.
Then start spotting in the area. Once you get to the edge, overreduce your paint. Then blend out your base. Then clearcoat and blend this out. The key is to make sure you have a BIG area to blend so you don't run into your masking tape and paper.

Yes TAZ I know A corvette is mainly fiberglass..... I just an so used to regular cars it just slipped my mind haha.
anyway it sounds like Alex is using spray paint to do the repair and all our suggestions are based on using a spray gun and automotive paint products,Untill Alex replies and tells us what he is using its hard to give a quality response.

I had both my rear panels, my gas lid, my back bumper, and 3 areas on my hood, and 2 other spots of my frame that holds the targa top. I had featherd them all out REALLY far but it just wasnt enough and no matter what i tried with the hard lines they showed through. I just decided earlier this morning to just sand the whole car back down and start from step one so i didnt have to worry about the lines that wouldnt go away. I bought the same black as i used before WA85555 Black. I just got done sanding the whole car with 220 to get all the high spots down completly and am sanding with 400 now before i shoot the automotive 2k primer you guys recommended. Tommorow or the next day ill be shooting the green for the stripes and the black for the body then clear coat and will post pictures if all goes well.

Wydir I was only using spray can primer for the primer becuase i didnt think i was going to need enough to justify buying any.

Im using a gravity feed spray gun.

Thank you for the help.

I forgot to ask, what color green are you going with the stripes. And what type stripes (SS type?)

I posted what it looked like before I stripped it down to fix the bubbles it was my first paint job, i was gonna do the same style but now im debating on wether to do a set of ACR stripes on it.
The color i choose was a toyota green with silver flake "toyota 6U1" I was originally going to do it snakeskin green like the dodge viper the first time I did it but than i decided it was a tad to dark and i wanted something a little brighter to contrast the black.

well im relieved to hear your using good products and when blending a color you never go to your tape line. The roll back is for tapering the edge of the clear not base

the process

Okay so like i said i decided to restart the whole car. I dry sanded with 400 to put a paintable surface on the car. than i shot the 2k primer. I did it with a 1.7 needle with 48psi at the gun. Heres a picture of it primered with that 2k stuff. I found it was a little more time consuming and harder to spray that in comparison to the last primer i sprayed from my gravity feed sprayer but after 5 hours of sanding the body smooth with 600 grit wet sand paper. Between 3 of us i can see why everyone recommends it it came out flawless.

Following this I wiped it down with prepsol and tack cloth than i sprayed the green for the stripes with a 1.4 needle with 40PSI at the gun.

waited 45 minutes and than taped off for the stripes as shown. I used that green frog leaf tape i think is what its called from LOWES, i was kinda scared to try it but it was a dollar cheaper and it paid off later as youll see. After 3 hours of taping it off just the way i wanted it we Prepsol wiped and tack clothed agian and sprayed the black also with a 1.4 needle with 43 PSI at the gun.

Than waited 45 minutes and peeled off the the tape and paper for the stripes.

The frog tape was perfect for the stripes. It sealed the line perfect and left barely any residue, came right off too. It may not seem as sticky as the 3m but its the only way ill go in the future. From here im kindof out of time so the adventure of this project will have to wait untill i return to tennessee in a week or 2. When i get back im going to wet sand the stripes down slighty from the black to the green to get rid of the ridges than Prepsol wipe the car down agian and tack cloth it and shoot the 3 layers of clear for it :D

I hope this helps some people if they are wanting to paint there car.

Forgot to say i checked the TDS on the PPG website for all the paints i was useing for recommended needle sizes and PSI to use with my gun and it helped drastically.

Very good. Thanks for all the pics also.
Gonna be sharp once you get it completely done.
Glad that tape worked out for you to. Rolled the dice using more of a house painting type tape, but it seeme to work well. Sometimes using tape like that will leave tape residue if you pull the car/truck out in the sun for a bit, then try to remove it later. Or you leave it on for a while, then try to remove it. Looked like it was fine for you though.

Be sure and post final pics once you are done.
