99 Ford red

I'm gonna paint a 99 ford pick up bed soon,I don't have a paint code yet and the color is currently white. My question is, will I have to seal it?I'm afraid if I sand and paint,it won't match the rest of the truck.Unless ford used a white base. He's only bringing me the bed so,I won't be blending . /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif

I know when I was using DuPont there red was very transparent and I had to use there ground coats to get the paint to cover in less than 5 coats , but now I use Sherwin Williams and there paints cover waaay better , 2- 3 coats would be plenty for it to match . So what I am saying is that it depends on how transparent your paint is .Personally I never use sealer , but that will probably be frowned upon by most , but it works for me .

That should have a grey sealer from the factory. If you think the color is going to be transparent you can throw down a coat of grey base,it'll be thinner and probably alot cheaper.PPG's gotten better on their reds, now most of them are covered in 3 coats.

Ford code "E4" red which is about the only solid red they used in '99 covers in about 2-3 coats in the PPG Global system. I believe the PPG # is 4217, I can look it up tomorrow and let you know for sure.

By the way it is also a VERY GOOD match in Global. One of the few colors I don't mind "panel" painting if needed.
In case your wondering I am a full time painter at a large ford dealership collision center.

Austin,Good call on the color! Thanks for the info,my buddy is going to get the code when he has a chance.I have the tailgate and checked it against the paint chip book with a paint jobber,(20 min. away,How cool is that?) hoping for the"E4".It's base is over white in the Dupont sheets.Dupont is about $88 a qt retail V/S $34 for the Nason line, guess which one he wants? Will I get the same match with Nason? The only other red(out of about 7 for 99)) may be the "F1" which is over a light gray. Do you think 2qts of Base and 2qts of clear will do it?I may get a gal of clear just to have it around. Thanks,Jim

Sorry Jim but although Nason is excelent for overall paint jobs, it's not the best for exact color matching. If your buddy realy wants to save money with Nason then let him know that the color match is not garunteed.
