Acrylic Lacquer

I was just given several boxes of Sherwin-Williams acrylic lacquer. This stuff is automotive paint from around 1970.
I opened a can and the paint looks good. Has the paint gone bad over so many years and if not can I spray urethane clear over this stuff? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Good or not, I don't know.... You are supposed to be able to shoot urethane clear over it.

I wouldn't use it unless you were just messing around doing your mailbox or something like that........

I don't think that stuff ever goes bad, just dries up. I would spray out some test panels to see. One thing I've found is you need to let the lacquer dry several hours if it's on kinda heavy before shooting the urethane over it. This seems to eliminate the outgassing dimples. I know of a couple of urethane over lacquer jobs I did 10+ years ago that still look good (might be luck). I usually only use my lacquer for certain artwork applications nowadays. I got about 40 pint cans of all different colors. I hate to throw it out so I'll use it for something. Thanks for the input...<><
