I've never had the 3m green tape leave adhesive. My guess would be you masked off an area that wasn't cured out and in reality you have marks in the paint that just look like adhesive.

I just painted my tank and rear fender and for my first time I'd say I kicked proverbial ass. my biggest problem was that the 3M green masking tape I used left a lot of adhesive on the covered areas.I wet sanded with 2000 grit sandpaper, then scrubed it with a little paint thiner on a paper towel. got some of it of. I'm worried that if I sand any more it will take of the paint. Is there a better kind of tape? Or maybe a CHEAP type of adhesive remover? keep in mind I'm only 15 and on a very limited budget. any tips will help!

How long should I wait for the base coat to cure before taping of the flames?

Depends on what you're using. Most true bases can be taped on in about an hour if the proper reducer was used, but for heavy masking like this I prefer to add 1/2 to a full hour to the manufacturer's recomendation as long as you have the std. 12-24 hour window to topcoat.

Rubbing Alcohol may clean off tape gook it that is what it is you see.... it sould not hurt the paint, but test it some where if at all possible. I don't want to wreck your work, and I was told by bager Film folks I could do that for frisket films. I am not a painter just doing my very first bike too... Mac

I just painted my bike with flames and had the same thing. I used the rubbibg alcohol and it worked great. It also cleaned up the oil from my finger prints on the black paint before clearing.

Not many shops use this tape, so maybe it had been sitting around for awhile.

While this is still open, here's another one.PPG's DX320 prep wash works well.It will work for a general prep, but you have to do it a few times because it evaporates much quicker than a normal prep.Dx330 is the good stuff, but it can soften and smudge the base. Also, don't use thinner or reducer for a prep wash like years ago. They do the job but they leave a residue behind that's undesirable to paint over.

PPG SPIRIT WIPE IS GOOD ADHEHSIVE REMOVER ,SO IS SIKKENS ANTISTATIC WIPE.
I IN NEW ZEALAND ALSO HAVE NEVER HAND ANY PROBLEM WITH 3M 233+ GREEN TAPE WHICH IN ELEVEN YEARS IN THE TRADE I BELIEVE IT IS MOST EXPENSIVE BUT THE BEST EVER AND WORTH IT.
3M FINELINE BLUE PLASTIC TAPE IS VERY GOOD FOR TIGHT CORNERS

I personally use the PPG Spirit Wipe (837) and it does work great. A nice very subtle cleaner.
