Air compressor ???\'S

I bought a far bigger air compressor today, than I had, and need to learn a few things.

This is a 2 stage 7.5 hp, 220 single phase, 80 gallon tank. It appears to be rated at 17.4 scfm @100 psi, and 16.9 scfm @179 psi.

It comes with out a mag starter, and with out any type of air regulator.

So, where do I seach out mag starters?

Next is a bit more complicted maybe....

I want to run all kinds of air tools, and still paint. So would any air line that had run with a inline oiler be ruined for painting?

Right now I am trying to find a regulator, and don't know if I should avoid the FRL (Filter Regulator, Lubricator) types?

There is another type that does not auto oil, and has no place for oiling, and since I want to paint, perhaps that is the type I need?

Also would teeing this off as one full pressure line for impact tools, with the regulated line for painting be better?

Thanks in advance..... Mac

here's a starter for you:
http://www.chpower.com/chstore/accessories/acc_detail.asp?itemid=20 0018&accCategory=100&accSubCategory=1187

you can do a search and find tons of them out there. Or build your own. it's pretty simple

Don't use an air line with oil in it for painting...very bad. There are probably multi taps off the compressor, if not use a tee. Run one manifold with your FRL for your tools and another line with a reg/filter for your painting.

Or don't use a luber, I never have...they suck. I run air tools all day with no problems...just throw a couple of drops of oil in the tool every once and a while. The key though is DRY air.

Do a seach for autobody supplies and you'll find all kinds of regulator setups

also....check your compressor and make sure it came with a pressure switch. That's what the starter gets it's feedback from to trigger the aux contacts. Without it the starter won't start and stop.

sometimes they are part of the starter so check that out too. it all depends on which one you buy

Re: Air compressor ???\'S

Thanks for the link, and directly to the correct type of part!

Would that part more or less be universal ?

This is a Sears model made for Sears by Ingersol Rand. It say Sears and if you happen to have a current catalog from Sears is on pg 179 item "F".

I have found this link to it: 2nd item down on the page......

http://www.sears.com/sr/mercado/searchall.jsp?keyword=16780N&BV_SessionID=@@@@0613187542.1034336768@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccjadcghgedjjlcehgcemgdffmdfil.0&bidsite=CRAFT&targetPage=%2Fme rcado%2Fsearchall.jsp&vertical=SEARS&x=25&y=14

Maybe I was told wrong and don't need the mag starter? I can't tell.... maybe it would like a mag starter, but can work with out one?

My concern is the CHPOWER one you pointed me too, may vary some how??

I was hoping to use the compressor today, but I can see right now that is not going to happen..... Mac

Re: Air compressor ???\'S

you'll have to do your homework on the different manufactures. If it's a Sears I'd go with the one the make for it, if they do, that would be the easiest.

If you want to get up and running today see if there is a Grainger near you. They have all that stuff in stock. Also a good electrical supply house will have it too

I was searching a link and doing the homework when you posted.... I edited in the link.... I have nothing near me.. Never heard of Grainger.

The folks at Sears don't seem to know whats what..... They were surprised that no wire and no air reg were mounted.... Salesmen ya know! Mac

I am no painting expert but I am an electrician tis may be my only chance to have input.

In my experience a single phase compressor dosen't need a magnetic starter those are for three phase. what you do need is a presure switch as mentioned and a set of contacts which come with compressors I have hooked up if these are not present I would talk to Sears.

Hope this helps

they do make starters for single phase comps. Check out the link above. I know I wouldn't really call it a mag starter like that would be in a MCC or something but that's what they call it. It's basically protects from the inrush current and usually has motor heaters in it for motor overloading protection.
It's a fancy breaker and relay really

Re: Air compressor ???\'S

Thxs guys I hired a electrician. He wired the pressure switch as I would have, not knowing what a mag starter was.

I have been working that compressor hard, and it starts right up with no apparent difficulties.

I ran it so hard today I got the room area it is in up to 80 degress F, which is good for me!! Winter is near on, and anything I can add in the way of heat is good for the place. Come summer I will just add a exhaust fan, and leave the door open.....

I ordered up a water trap regulator, but can't wait for it.... So no sand blaster use yet... That needs 125 psi max.... This systems make about 170 psi, and plenty of water even though it is in a warmer area.... I have added a 3/4" pad sewn to the tank for sound proofing since this is basicly in a storage area in the barn apt, and there is a guy living on the other side of the wall.

He says he feels like he is on the ferry from Yarmouth
haha.gif

I got foam under the crate the comp was shipped on, but did cut the crate parts smaller, to reduce vibs....

I also added tape to the cage because it rang like a bird cage does when you run yer fingers over the bars.....

I got rid of some of the sounds that made that comp really loud, and hope to tame more somehow..... Mac
