air compressor

Hey everyone, I had a question about my compressor. I am not getting the correct pressure to my paint guns. The guages on the tank say that the pressure is right going to the line, but by the time it gets to my gun, it is not right. I cleaned out my filters and regulators, but cannot figure it out. Does anyone have any suggestions on what is wrong and how to fix it? Thanks in advance for any help. By the way, it has a 21 gallon tank and cycles like it is supposed to. Thanks again.

the pressure at the end of the hose will be different than the pressure at the begining. pump up the pressure at your compressor and regulate it at your gun and you'll be fine.

What Hoss said. If you need 60 PSI at the gun and your setting your regulator to 60 PSI the pressure drop when you pull the trigger will bring you under the required 60 PSI (I'm using 60 as an example--follow what the gun manufacture recommends, your mileage may vary, not sold in certain states, etc) Set the regulator to whatever pressure you need with the trigger pulled on the gun. Also get a gauge for your gun.

I have regulators at the tank and at the gun. I have them both set at the recommended pressure, but it does not stay that way when I pull the trigger on the gun. It does not matter what I have the gun set at, because my psi drops immediately to around 10 when I pull the trigger. It is supposed to stay about 30-35 psi going into the gun. I have used this compressor many times to paint without any trouble before, and cannot figure out what is wrong. As I said before, the guage on the tank says it is at 115 psi, which is what my compressor is set at. But, by the time the pressure reaches the gun at the end of the line, it drops to around ten. It is like it loses velocity going through the line. I know it is not the gun because I switched to two different guns and it does the same thing. It even loses pressure using a blow nozzle on the end of the line. Any help will be greatly appreciated because I am stumped.

Thanks, Teddy

set your compressor regulator at about 70-80 psi....set the regulator at the gun inlet at about 35 psi...your flowing pressure should hit about 33-34 psi..you lose
a pound or two between the gun and the inlet reg. sometimes...I'm not that anal about it...if I'm within a couple pounds..

oh..make sure you are using a regulator, and not one of those crappy flow valves...they ****! LOL

I'd figure it out by process of elimination. You said the guns are fine and the compressor shows it's up to pressure. It seems that the problem has to be in one of the connections or the line itself. I don't know about air lines but I've seen hydraulic lines collapse in on themselves causing a restricted flow. I'd beg, borrow or steal another line with different connectors to rule that out. Are there filters/oilers/water traps in the line? they could be gumed up. Is your line attached in with a quick connect? Connect the blow nozzle directly into the compressor and hit the trigger. Is the gauge on the tank ok? If it's shot and it's reading incorrectly your compressor may be shutting off prematurely with way less than 115 LBS in it.

Thanks for all the input. I did try setting the gauges to 80 psi, but I am still only getting about 10 at the gun. It is like I am losing about 70 psi by the time it gets to the gun. I did have some filters and a water trap on the line, but I took them off and it still does not work. I guess I am going to have to find another air line and see if maybe mine has collapsed or has clogged up some how. Thanks again for all the quick responses and input. These forums have really helped me out a lot.
