I want to do blue flames with stars in it and red and white stripes for the backround. In which order should I lay tape out and which order do I paint. I'm really stumped on this one.

Arthur, if it were me i would do it like this:
1 Spray your white base the whole job
2 Tape your flames , before spraying the flames cut out your stars(tape or automask)place them in your flames spray your blue
3 Untape the flame and pull off the stars
4 Spray a coat or two of intercoat clear
5 Now tape up your flames to cover them(protect them from the red)
6 Tape up your white stripes (cover up what you want to remain white), now every thing should be covered except what you want to be red and spray your red
7 Pull all your tape and clean up any mis tapes
8 Spray 4 coats of clear and let dry
9 After dry ( the next day)wet sand with 600 grit to get rid of any tape edge
10 pin stripe your out lines
11 Clear with 3 more coats and let dry
12 Wet sand with 1500 or 2000 and buff
i did a helmet not too long ago and thats the way i did it and you get less tape edges this way. Good luck

arthur i'm no pro either but i've been playing with this stuff for a while when someone says intercoat they are refering to a base coat clear coat system paint. intercoat clear is basically a clear base coat meaning it isn't thick like regular clear coat but just adds some protection for whatever is underneath it. in other words if you mess something up after you've sprayed some intercoat clear you haven't screwed up the whole paint job. just everything on top of the intercoat. I basically use it after i'm done painting for the night because the next day all you have to do is scuff it with some grey scotch brite wipe it clean and start painting again. this stuff is very helpful if you are using candys or metalic base coats because if you sand them you pretty much ruin the paint. hope this helps

Instead of buying candies and pearls you can make them.Add some pearl or color to the intercoat clear and you have what you would have bought. You have more control over the strength of it too.Unless you're doing a light fog like a flame tip or edge, clearing it down is prefered to getting carried away over reducing it.
