Help!!! I had an auto body shop 20 years ago and never needed to do any custom painting. I was a pretty good painter in my day but DANM, things have changed.I feel like rip van winkle. I want to get into some graphic and flame work, just working out of my house, but the industry has changed. Everything is different. Is HOK the way to go? is it better? Do you need to use only their products? Also It seems to me that a good detail gun would work well on flames. Do I really need an airbrush? Thanks

Hi Bluesguy,

Welcome back to the industry :)

A detail gun works fine for flames, but if you want to get into drop shadows and highlights, you'll need to pick up an Airbrush. Iwata Eclipse is a fine choice, and I've heard good things about Iwata's new Revolution line as well (a little less expensive than the Eclipse)

I use an Iwata RG3 detail gun, and it works fantastic. Others here will probably have additional suggestions for you.

Lots of people agree that HOK is great paint for kustom work, but there are other options out there. The nice thing about HOK is that its all organized into a system, they are dedicated to custom painting, and they have tech support available to answer any of your questions.

if you haven't already checked it out, www.hokpaint.com is a good place to start.

Also, these boards are packed with good stuff (as you probably already know) that will help you get back into the swing of things.

Hope that helps,
