OK , not sure if I should post this here or in the pinstriping section..but here it is.
Can I or has anyone tried , clearing over pinstriping tape? I would like to paint the basecoat, lay down a 5/16 wide stripe, do my marbelizing , then pull the tape , interlcear, and then put a thin stripe down the middle of the taped out line and clear over everything. Has anyone ever cleared over pinstriping tape?? Thanks!!

The basecoat will be black and the pinstripe would be red. I'm using a blue marble with a cobalt blue kandy on the inside of the wide stripe and red marble on the outside and a brandywine kandy over everything. then I would lay the pinstriping down inside the black stripe. My vision is to have a dark, almost blood red marble on the outside and a darker burgundy hued marble on the inside with a double black and red stripe separating the two....am I going in the right direction?
Thanks for your help Taz!!!

well that was the original plan.....but when I ordered my paint I forgot to get the red paint :sillyme:and my schedule was adjusted to allocate time this weekend to paint...
That and the fact that I always get marks in my paint from taping.... am I taping things off too soon?? I waited 90 minutes today on the project bike we're painting. We taped it off, shot the accent color and pulled the tape in a matter of minuted and I have lines in the basecoat from the tape. Plan is to try and wetsand the marks out tomorrow after the paint has set for at least 12 hrs.We may have to mask off the accent color and shoot some more base to clean it up correctly.....

You Can But Why Not Base The Red Stripe On?.cyas

Exactly my thinking. Just spray the thin red line on.

You can pick up a pint today so you can paint this weekend. I would/nt spray over 'tape' since it takes quite a bit of clear to 'level' the surface so you don't feel the tape.

Just seal the parts, then spray where the stripe is going to be, then put a 1/6" tape over it.
Then finish the rest of the job. When you are done, pull all the tape off and you'll end up with a red line. In other words, do the job backwards. 1/16" red, then spray it black, then mask up the 5/16" line, then marbleize.

ok....I'll do it the right way.... :headbutt:
My only fear is that if I paint the red and tape it off, given the amount of time the tape will be on the red, I'm gonna pull the paint when I finally take the tape off. I'm using 3m tape I got from a local automotive paint distributor. How long is the minimum time to wait before taping anything off? I realize temp and humidity levels will have an effect as well... Thanks for your help guys.
Every time I paint something I get a greater respect for you guys that do this day in and day out. I get frustrated too easily...my son (19) who is doing this project with me has said we should have video taped everything and sold it to the highest bidder since it would have looked like a budget bike /paint shop version of the Tuttles from OCC..lol...well hey..if we can get bucks for me ridin' his butt and being a beeyatch...I'm game!!! LOL :moon:

Hope the job came out good for you if you did it this past weekend.

I usually wait about 1/2 hour before taping over the base.

Thanks Taz,
Actually it came out really good!! I did go with paint for the thin stripe. It was a fire orange and I just sprayed the tops of eah fender and tank and let it feather out on the vertical surfaces. Then I taped off the stripe, painted the black base. Taped of the center section and did a blue marble and tinted that with a oriental blue kandy. Then taped that area off and did a red marble on the outsides, then untaped everything. The stripe was an obnoxious orange compared to everything else!!:ack: Then I sprayed my brandywine kandy over everything. Unfortunatley the center section ended up being just a dark burgundy. (i knew i should have gone with my instinct and over reduced the brandywine..) Everything else looked GREAT. So I just retaped the center and added some red marble on top...Here's some no-so-great pics of the final result. It's hard to capture the depth and trueness of the colors, but I LIKE IT!!!

Thanks again for all the help guys!!!!

p.s. I was to slightly tint my 'Shadow" badges. Could I just add a little of the bradywine kandy my clear and just spray over the bades? Or should I tint an intercoat with sg-100 and brandywine , and then clear??

p.p.s I still have to color sand and shoot my last clear coat...

Looks great! Good job.

Once you sand and reclear, it should be nice and flat for wetsand and buff.

As far as your badges, as long as you don't mind 'pink' badges, you can just add one or two coats of candy over the chrome. If you want them more of a brandywine, then you can keep adding the candy color over it. This will be tricky to do since there are alot of sharp edges on the chrome, so you'll have to go easy and take your time on each coat.

:luck:
