Hey guys,

I need some more of your expert advise on this topic. Ok, I work with a woman whos husband works for Fords. He does chrome dipping. Now I ask if he can dip my fenders and tank and he said yes. My question to you is this. 1. Can this really be done like this? Do i need to take the paint off so thats its metal? Is this a wise thing to do to my bike? I want to paint the tank after so that only the flames will be chrome. Will the paint stick to the chrome? Any help would be great.

Thanks

I think my only question would be, "what is the clear going to hold onto". I would think that it would delaminate within a few months. As far as I know, if you scratch up the chrome and apply clear to it it's gonna look horrible. Even if you use an adhesion promoter I think your gonna run into delaminating problems.
However, I have shot a few helmets with a chrome "lettering" vinyl. It was a pain tring to get the stuff to lay flat on a round object, but that's why God made Heat-Guns!!! LOL!! Although 75% of the helmet was paint and only 25% was vinyl. so I didn't really worry about the lamination issue. Maybe you could chrome part of it and then inodize part of it??

Many moons ago I did a tank for someone. It was already chromed so I taped the flames off with two layers of tape and lightly sand blasted the masked area with fine silica sand. I left it masked and painted the flames. It left a rough line and high paint edge which I striped and that helped hide it a little. No clear was put on the chrome.
I never saw the guy again so I don't know how it held up. We told him it probably won't last but he wanted it done anyway. I was working at a bike shop at the time and still learning to paint. Wish I had some pics because it looked awesome. The flames were classic style yellow, orange, and red with a blue pinstripe.
