Just wondering if anyone on the forum has purchased tanks/fenders for Harley's like these....

Harley tanks/fenders on ebay

And if so, how was your experience. Did you have to seal the gas tank? How did you prep?

Thanks,
John

Hi John

I've supplied a lot of these style tanks to people and I always suggest a pressure test as for sealing the inside of the tank - personally I dont bother as I tend to keep my tank filled with fuel. But there are plenty of tank sealers available. Dont be surprised if the tanks need some minor work I've had plenty of good quality ones but just a many crap ones that needed grinding or rewelding.

You'll definately need to straighten out those from waves, grindmarks and shrinking marks.I degrease them, sand them with 80 grit, beadblast hard to sand areas and then epoxy them.A good etch prime doesn't hurt but they're already roughed up for adhesion, the only benefit would be a little more corosion protection.Definately have the tanks pressure tested and sealing is a personal preference.Didn't see the price because it was over but they're usually priced very reasonable to help offset the straightening time.Harley is getting me (or my insurance) $1000 for a tank and rear fender for my WG,damn.

a good local radiator shop should be able to pressure check and seal motorcycle gas tanks for you. I get a combo deal for both and it's around $30 a tank. Some bikes have two tanks, so it's $60

Also I like getting tanks sealed, 'cause I paint them up to sell from time to time and they sit for a little while at times. Sealing them keeps them from rusting inside since they're new and no fuels been in 'em. Plus I'm in humid FL and have had customer's tanks start to rust inside in a day or two. Gets messy.
