Anyone used the Omni primer?

Has anyone used the new PPG "econo-primer"?? It's about half the cost of the normal stuff ($26/qt with hardner at the shop here).
You can use it with reducer for a thin primer, or without reducer for a spray filler. I have had good results using it reduced, but I tried it the other night as a spray filler on a new set of fatbobs. The crap started peeling off in sheets around the filler neck. It's a new set of tanks, but I scrubbed with detergent/water, and then scrubbed again with Acryli-clean wax/grease remover. I'm not sure what's going on. It almost peels like some rubber coating. I smoothed out the spot where it peeled, and shot a thinned layer of the same primer down, hoping that will do it.

Has anyone else used this stuff or seen these problems??

Thanks,
Chop

Chop - You need to scrach up the metal before you prime. The reson it didn't do it with the reduced primer is because the film thickness you were putting down was a lot thinner than if its not reduced - I use the PPG K36 expoxy primer - but first I scrub and degrease and then hit it with 80 grit to give the primer something to bite into -- Bones!~

Bones--
I'm thinking that may be the case. I didn't rough them up too much because the metal was already MUCH rougher than needed (that's why I used the primer in spray filler mode).
I'm guessing the metal was too smooth around the filler caps, since that's where it was peeling off so bad.

Thanks!

Yep,sand it.You can use an etch primer to avoid that but the good stuff is more expensive than a few sheets of DA paper.

I haven't tried the Omni gray epoxy primer yet. My local PPG dist. told me it is the exact same stuff as the gray DP epoxy. You never know!

Rex and Bones-- Just an FYI, I fixed that area, and it came out really good. I just shot the second layer of primer reduced.

tcannon- I have been really happy with the stuff up to this little episode. It fills really well, and if you give it plenty of time to harden up, it sands real easy, too. I'm a newbie (I don't know what DP primer is) , but I'd definitely recommend trying it.

I "m doing my motorcycle. I used the omni 2 part primer for base coat clear coats. Put on my base 2 coats of clear, sanded layed out flames pulled tape had a couple of spots where the paint peeled off too. Ended up my hole paint job peeled right off the primer? any thoughts? I sanded the primer with 600 used wax and greese remover. blew it off with air tack ragged it and it peeled off.

I know where you guys are coming from,I've had all of that happen. The first thing I'll say is DON'T use lacquer thinner for cleaning unless it's the first step and you go by the book from there. No matter what I use I always sand my metal with at least 180.At this point I've gone straight to DP or etched it with 1790/1791 before the DP,haven't had a prob between the 2 but I pefer the etch primer for the nice stuff-forget the rattlecan stuff if the bare metal spot is larger than the cap.DP is the epoxy(K36 is urethane primer and good stuff) but it's soft by nature.I always lay it down over sanded or etch primed steel and take my bodywork or paint from there. The trick to it is to let it sit a few days before touching it and scuff it up before putting anything over it.Just to put it in perspective DP cut with the good 401 hardner (and this stuff will stick and feather out to totally unsanded substrates if done right-no $hit) will be open for at least 3 days at 70 degrees and not need scuffing for anything to stick to it(it was 7 days but I'm not sure if the lead free formula is the same without looking it up). This stuiff is great but even PPG says it's restoration class stuff,so let it sit if you use it.I believe K36 or the K38,NCP 270's will go right over the 1790/91 so that will cut down on times if needed but double check the P bulletin for the 1790 to be sure.I had to restrip my buddy's fender after the bodywork just recently because I took a shortcut I knew better than to and it bit me in the a$$(the thinner did it).

Seems to be alot people having problems with the Omni Primer. I've never used it - My jobber turned me on to the PPG DP 2 Part Epoxy because he knew I was doing custom paint and it was a better product. As he said: The paint we sell wasn't made to do the stuff you're doin, so we'd better go with the good stuff" - I haven't had a problem with it at all -- I also used the "self-etching" primer and had a problem with that peeling off - -My jobber said "just sand it a little before you shoot it on" and I said: = Why the hell do you think I bought the "self-etching primer -- so I wouldn't have to sand!!!
