Bare Metal Prep

If you have a new bare metal fender, should you sand it first before you put your primer coat on? If so does 600 grit sound right?

Thanks!

Well if the fender is shipped in bare metal then usually it has some sort of oily coating that needs to be removed first of all. I usually clean it real good with carb cleaner, then wax and grease remover, but thats just me. Then I would reccomend sanding it with 240-320 grit, hit your edges with a red scuff pad, then give it some etch primer followed by your filling primer. Hope this helps!!

Thanks for the info. Still learning the ropes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/newbie.gif

I checked the HOK website regarding primers. They show 2 types, kp21 kwikure and kp-2cf primer. Neither mentioned "etch primer." Could I go with just one of these? Does anybody use these primers? Which is better to work with?

Any help is appreciated.
