You can spend a whole lot of money on just primer but, it can go a long way. So, now you'll get the process I use and its not to say that its the only way to do it. I start by using Dupont self etching primer. Sprays on thin. I think this stuff is great. Then, I use a Dupont filler primer mixture. Let it sit for a day and sand it out with 600 grit and then base/clear coat. As a reminder and, in my opinion, all bare tin needs body work with either bondo or evercoat products. There is always a hard edges that will show up. So give it a good look and feel for them before you start.

Hi.just went thru this process with HOK people. It all may not be necessary but it sure gave a flawless finish.First you will need to ecth the bare metal with an etching primer. Then shoot it with HOK epoxy primer,a couple of coats will be ok.were gettin there.Next use your primer,2 or 3 coats, wet sand with 400.If you want to use candy red try the HOK orion silver, then shoot your candy.
PPG also has these materials,it doesn't have to be HOK.
