Base coat mix

i just got some of the mixing base coats from a place that was getting rid of some of their paint. this is the stuff that you add together to make up a base coat. the base is ment for just reducer not hardner.

my question is, can i use it strait as basecoat, mix it w/ eachother and just use it, or is there something i need to add to it other than reducer?

Your question is confusing but after reading it a couple of times it seems you've got some standard urethane base coat and all you need to do is reduce it as appropriate and shoot it. There are guys who insist on putting a hardener into paints which do not require them. They think it will make the paint more durable. Its like saying that if the cook spits in the soup it will be better. Spit don't belong in soup and hardener don't belong in a non-catilized paint. Chemically all it does is pollute the mix.

So, to answer your question, reduce it and shoot it. However, I have to say this, you'd be a fool to shoot it on anything other than a test panel first - the paint store wasn't getting rid of the stuff because it was the finest paint that ever graced their interior space.

Let me tell you the three steps to doing a great paint job. First your do great prep work. Second your use great products. Third you employ great technique. If the paint store is trying to get rid of the material you plan on using then you've already screwed up step 2.

thanks for the info kong. i've got buddies that work at the shop. they are just down sizing so it's good stuff. it's martin senior tech paint. i just was worried about a stabilizer or something that it needs.

thanks again for the info!

Hoss, I believe what you got was 'toners' which are mixed together to make a basecoat. At least that's what I think you are talking about.
Some toners can be painted straight without adding any binders, or other other toners.

If they are pearl toners, I would definitely suggest mixing it with some base clear (SG-100 or equiv) Normally about a 80% base clear and the rest the pearls.

Like Kong said, do a test panel and test it out

the jugs say base coat mix. i do have the pearls too. the base coat mixes look exactly like the consistancy of a regular base coat. they are just a thicker.

i will do some test pannels first, difinitly.

thanx for the info.

-HOK actually has a "newer" product (SG-150 pearl and flake carrier) GOOD STUFF :)

- most common reduction ratios are 2:1 and 1:1. just FYI
