Basic HVLP spraying question

Sorry for the lamer question but after googling up a few basic descriptions and pictures of rigs for HVLP painting... I get the impression the paint is syphoned.

It isn't clear in the pictures if there is any pressure applied to the paint. All I'm finding with google, are guns with quart cups looking like syphon rigs.

If hvlp relies on syphon then I wonder if it suffers from the same problems as conventional spraying where you have to keep the cup positioned level to get good results.

I use conventional (compressor) spraying and pressurized pot to avoid that very problem. But as you may know that method does suffer from overspray and waste problems.

Maybe someone with HVLP experience can explain how the setup works?

guns with a cup on the bottom are syphon feed and guns with the cup on top are gravety feed.the cup on top rig is technicaly a sypon feed as well but we only use that feature when spraying in all positions ( under trailers for instance).you can purchase a liner for some guns to alow all position painting .the gravety gun is easier to keep clean and the more popular of the two but both work well.in both cases there is no presure aplied to the cup as in presure feed guns.cyas

What is `cyas'? or is it a typo?

Two questions come to mind after reading your helpful reply:
1) Is there no opportunity for an hvlp user to pressure feed the paint
as in conventional?

2) If the hvlp user wanted to tap into something larger than a quart
supply cup, does the hvlp system allow some way to do that?

Assuming no pressure feed is possible, is that not a serious handicap so far as being able to manipulate the gun? For example; I often find I like to turn the gun 90 degrees counterclockwise from handshake position. I find it is restful on my wrist and arm to vary from handshake to 90 Counter clockwise and back as I paint.

I think if would be quite a liability not to be able to do that. Or am I not understanding something about hvlp type setup?

Also I find conventional syphon feed to be orders of magnitude slower than conventional pressure feed. So is hvlp syphon feed also slow compared to conventional pressure feed?

I'm an amateur painter but I will take a shot at this.

1. Many HVLP guns are available in gravity and pressure feed configurations. RV, truck and yacht painters have long used them. They are different guns and one cannot be converted to the other as far as I know.

2. One liter is largest cup that I know of.

3. A gravity gun will work in almost any position, including inverted if the 3M or Dekups bags are used. But even without them, you can normally turn the gun sideways briefly while painting.

Quality production HVLP guns are pretty fast (Sata, Devilbliss plus) but I have no idea how much slower they are than a pressure feed gun.

I Agree .pressure Feed Guns Are Normaly Used For Production Painting .they Work Good When Using One Color And Lots Of It .but If You Want To Paint Cars And Bikes Whith Any Finess You Need A Gun With A Cup.auto Paint Shops And Custom Painters Have Been Using Them For Years For Very Good Reasons.so I Would Take A Page From There Book.good Luck.cyas

PS.CYA OR CYAS IS GOODBYE.---CYAS.LOL

I use an accuspray hvlp turbine system for mobile paint repair. I spray bumpers and small spot repairs up to painting a whole side of a car one time. I use siphon fed guns for all my paint and clear and a gravity fed gun for my sealer/adhesion promoter. Really no difference as ive used the siphon guns for the adhesion promoter before just an empty gun lying around so thats the one i use for the adhesion promoter.
