I want to use acrylic laq for my base coats and graphics on my road king...can I use a urathane clear coat on top?...how do you feel about the "crossfire" system from NAPA? I am a newbie to this, and dont want to make stuipid mistakes on a $20k bike...also, could you recomend a place to fin more flame and graphics templates?, your practice flames are a great start, but I'm looking for more..congrats on an awsome website, I've linked in several freinds and they all agree...keep up the great work!

I've shot 2k urethane clear over lacquer base and graphics with good results. You really have to get all of the solvents out of the lacquer (dry) before you shoot the urethane. The out gassing from the curing lacquer will mess up a smooth urethane top coat. I don't use lacquer anymore because the urethanes are so good. A urethane finish will look like new a lot longer. And the best thing is if you ever re-paint, the urethane will be a lot easier to re-finish.

I might get stepped on by one of the seniors, but I wouldn't use a urethane clear on top of lacquer. You will have problems if you do this. Stick with one system or the other. If you're having problems finding a color base in urethane check House of Kolor.

As far as flames go, have you tried to lay them out by hand with 1/8" tape?

It's not hard laying out a very cool set of flames that will be one of a kind. Practice with a pencil on paper for a little while then you're ready to lay 'em out on the car. The thing I like most about doing them by hand is you can lift the tape and change them if you don't like the way they look. Give it a try. If you still feel the need to use someone elses template, House of Kolor has "Bag 'O Flames" that you can use. They cost around $30.

But then you might be parked in a show right next to a set of flames identical to yours... To me, this just ain't acceptable. If you choose to try your hand at it, use 3M 233+ 1/8" tape. It's green and is much more forgiving than the 1/8" fine line plastic types of tape.

Good Luck Phil.

Most will agree with you on this one flamethrower. I, on the other hand, have no problem with using the urethane. I get a lot af grief about this from everyone I talk to, but Urethane will work as long as you let the laquer gas out(dry) like tcannon said in his post. If you are not sure try a test panel or stick with a laquer clear.
