I notice many of you talk about House of Kolor paint.Well if I was going to prime anything I'd use Valspar DTM 2000.It's made by the same company that is HOK and works with all type paints even lacquer. You will more than likely have to ask for it because Valspar doesn't try as hard to sell it as HOK line. It's only been around since 2000-2001 and the major jobbers push high dollar paint lines like Dupont and PPG.They make more money that way!! I'm new here but have 34 years in this business.

The best primer is Sherwin-Williams SpectraPrime P30. It's pre-flexed, comes in 7 colors - and there are a number of formulas available to make a whole palette of colors. (nice to shoot primer and sealer nearly the same color as your base coat - you can get base coat coverage in one coat then)

It can be converted to a sealer.
It's fast.

Here's the data sheet

Valspar also has a color of your choice primer"092 sealer/primer" I can paint something the actual color I want with the 092 and it takes very little base color to cover.I've used Sherwin williams but if you use much House of Kolor you can keep the same family of paint by using Valspar primers and sealers.Whatever works best for you?? I can't afford to take chances with my paint work by using several different brand names of materials for a job. It's much more simple if I do have a problem I don't have to guess with product I used caused the problem so I don't mix one brand of paint supplier with the others.BTW does Sherwin Williams have a custom paint line????Thanks for a great site!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with sticking to a single paint line for best results. The paint companies put a lot of R&D dollars into coming up with systems that take you from bare metal to clear, that work well together.

Having said that, I don't think using a product from the same manufacturer is the same as using products from the same line from a given manufacturer. (For example - would you use house paint primer from that manufacturer on your car? Of course not.)

No doubt, HOK & Valspar make some good products. You wouldn't go wrong going with that choice, and you'd end up with a great looking product.

The reason I mentioned the Sherwin-Williams SpectraPrime P30, is because you asked what the best primer was. ;-)

Does Sherwin-Williams make a custom paint line? Yes. Planet Color. It's the best, most versatile custom paint on the market today. You've probably seen it. It's on a lot of Nascar cars (Dale Jr. is a huge Planet Color & Sherwin-Williams supporter). It was on pretty much all the Champ cars (but Champ is gone now). At this just past SEMA show, it was Planet Color on two Best of Show winners. This stuff is everywhere. It was introduced a couple of years ago, and, especially this past year, has really taken off as a top choice for custom paint.

Google "Planet Color" +Paint ... and be prepared to spend a long time checking out a lot of very cool paint jobs. :speedy:

Just in case you don't recall, or didn't know, or it isn't obvious, the "SW" at the end of my user name is for "Sherwin-Williams". I am an employee of the company, so, not entirely unbiased. Which is not to say I'm completely biased either... I love cars. I love custom paint. I don't love Sherwin-Williams because I work there. I work there because I love their products and I love this business.

You can find the tip of the iceburg at our web sites. WHile the company has been spending quite a bit of money on R&D, new product development, and staying a step ahead of the competition with the latest in automotive paint innovation, we don't do the best web sites. The Sherwin-Automotive site does have a very helpful troubleshooting guide under the reference tab - and it works no matter what brand of paint you're shooting. The Planet Color site needs serious updating, but gives you some idea of what it is. The earlier mentioned Google search paints a much better picture.

Here's an award winning '49 Chevy custom pickup done in Planet Color (we won Best of Show or Best Paint at almost every show we attended in 2007)

Here's a quad on of my customers did in Planet Color (the black has red crystals in it - hard to see in the photos), and he stenciled the skulls and tribal using a Planet Color red similar to that on the '49 pickup.

Am I a little passionate about these products? Hell yeah! Can ya blame me? :bounce:

Thanks John for giving the info on Sherwin Williams paint line.Hell, I understand why you are so passionate now!I haven't used any SW paint since 1985.I had good results with the lacquer. No jobbers near me have it or haven't told me about the custom paint line.I'm always looking for better products.Maybe we can get some other paint companies rep to tell us how much better their products are than anybody else. It's kinda like Baskin Robbins ice cream don't you agree?A paint to suite the taste of everyone.I'd like to try spectra prime p30 and see how it compairs to Valspars DTM 2000.As far as Jones12 question about primer he better continue his survey at different shops before painting his Honda CBR.This debate on who has the best primer could go on forever!

Although I've only been involved in the paint side of the auto business for about 5 years or so, I do benefit from the experience of everyone I deal with every day. Honestly, from what it seems, among the top paint companies (Sherwin-Williams, PPG & DuPont), each has periods where there is a big focus on their automotive division, and each has periods where there is minimal focus on their automotive division. One of the three will be ahead in technological advances, some times by leaps, while the other two seem to coast along with whatever their last latest and greatest ideas were - some times to the point where they lag significantly behind.

Right now, SW is clearly pulling ahead. They are investing in new products & processes, new R&D dollars, new stores, and doing all the right things. The competition seems to be moving the other way right now. There are layoffs and budget cuts and new product introductions are limited or non-existent.

However, realistically, among the top paint lines from each company, all of them (us?) are making some **** good products. (which hasn't always been the case - including SW). One really can't go wrong to stick with one line from any of the offerings.

well i gotta say i just love my sikens .lol .cyas

As well you should. Sikkens makes a great product. ... For an artist the extra cost wouldn't be much of a factor. For a body shop though, where you're cranking out some number of cars every day, it can eat into your profits.
