Best way to uncover original paint?

I have a 1964 italian-made Vespa, 125cc. The original paint is a light-grey, but has been painted over in red. This is evident when removing the fuel tank and the side cowls. I would like to return the bike to its original color.

1) Is there a way to "buff out" the red to uncover the original grey? If so, I'd love to learn of a good technique/materials/etc.
2) Is option #1 ridiculous? Is it best to just purchase the original color and spray?

Thanks in advance.

You could probably do it if you had a ton of time on your hands. This would be extremely tedious work.
Now, if it was spray canned red, you might be able to wipe it off with some lacquer thinner.

Your best bet if you don't want to spend a lot of time or you can't wipe off the red is to sand it and repaint it.
