I have a car that is red and I am going to paint it black. If I spray the black right over the red will it cover ok or should I do the whole car with primer first?

Thanks

THE BLACK SHOULD COVER ANYTHING EASILY.
IF THE PAINT ON THE CAR IS IN GOOD CONDITION THE JUST PRIME THE REPAIRS YOU MIGHT DO.
IT NEEDS TO BE UNDERSTOOD THAT YOU SHOULDNT PRIME A WELL PAINTED PANEL IN ORDER TO RESPRAY IT.
PRIMER IS USED TO FILL REPAIRS AND IF THERE ARE NO REPAIRS YOU DONT NEED IT ,JUST A SANDED SOUND EXISTING PAINT SURFACE.
PRIMING THE WHOLE CAR MAY CAUSE TOO MUCH PAINT BUILD AND IT WILL BE MORE BRITTLE AND THE STONE CHIP AND SCRATCHES THAT MIGHT OCCUR WILL BE DEEPER AND HARDER TO TOUCH UP

Cool.

What grit sandpaper should you sand the old paint with before you spray?

This is a loaded Q.Everyone's different.I like 600 wet because it levels quick and is fine enough for anything to fill. This is for a nice overall or the final sand on scooter parts. For a cheapo it's 320 DA.If there's no leveling to be done like edges,a compound concave corner(?) or a blend panel a grey scuffy with soapy water is great.Wetsanding is great if you have the time for drying since alot of dirt is being washed away, but you can also get a nice clean job dry with a little extra prep.

Is it ok to wet sand bondo? Would you get a smoother edge?

Thanks

Very bad idea.Mud soaks up water and takes a while for it to evaporate, but if the mudwork was done over bare steel it just started rusting. If the edge wants to keep peeling back and not feather,it's either not dry enough or it's on galvanized steel. Both can be cured by letting it dry longer. The easiest way I like is get it almost there with 80grit,then finish off with 120-150,the choice is yours. The 120 gets you in primer quick, but 180 is better if you're worried about shrinkage.I forgot to mention earlier, red is known to bleed through, but black usually isn't a prob.It is prefered to seal the original finish on an overall though. If you use a black sealer you'll use less paint (or base).
