Blocking with 800

Sorry, I was in a rush when I posted that.
I am refinishing the front end cap of my 95 Chevy truck.
I went down to bare metal and etch primed. Then urethane hi build.
I blocked it with 320 and cut through in a few spots. Applied more urethane hi build and blocked again. That time I got down to 400 but cut through some spots again. This time I got down to 800 and started seeing some waves in the reflections. Just saying it's easier for me to look at the reflections than using a guide coat. I will post more pics when I'm done.

It sounds as though those waves were bodywork.

I still think if you did the guidecoat, you would have caught the waves earlier so you wouldn't have to prime so many times.
Normally you just need to do the bodywork, prime with light guidecoat, blocksand, then reprime one more time (if necessary).
The only reason you find it easier to 'see' the waves when you 800 is because the surface is slick. Pretty much I feel an unnecessary step.
You should be able to use the guide coat when sanding to your advantage, along with 'feeling' any waves.

If you haven't done that much sanding, once you 320, blow off the surface real good. Then lay a paper towel flat between your hand and the surface and feel any waves this way. Be sure and keep your hand completely flat. The paper towel will help your hand glide along the surface.

If you wetsanded with the 800, you'll probably find that you will have some rust spots pop up in the near future.

O.K.
The waves wound up being low spots that showed up really well when I Da'd with 320. I cut through to the etch primer in a few spots so I applied another full coat of hi build and this time used 3M dry guide.
320 with the DA again and it looks great. Blocked with 400 and 600 and am now ready to paint. At least I got alot of practice wet sanding.....:sillyme:

Why? There is 2 coats of etch primer underneath it. I thought that was supposed to prevent that from happening.
