box fan vs squirrel cage fan

I built a spray booth in my garage. It is a 5' wide by 8' tall by 6' deep spray room with an open front (no door), and then at the back there's a door, and a sealed room behind the door where I have typical household box fan mounted in the window that vents outside. The idea is air pulls air through a set (five 20"x20"furnace) filters in the back of the booth, on the wall where the door is. Make-up air is provided at the front of the booth, BTW. It works, but only "ok". Would a 1/4 or 1/2 bhp squirrel cage blower (or maybe 2?)(1000-1500CFM) mounted in that sealed "back room" and then vented to the window via a 12" or 16" flex tube) provide more "pull" than the box fan I am currently using?????

I have pics I can post, I just don't know how, if someone wants to post them for me.......

Yep....Squirel cage would be much better.....That's what I use. My set is similar but I have a 16X16 area of my garage framed with 1/2 inch conduit with Plastic covering it.
I use a 1hp S.C. fan from a old furnace boxed with 2 charcoal filters and then vented though the wall to the outside.

Oh.....Here is a spot you can post your pic's

I may be wrong but it sounds like you've got a negative pressure booth when you actually would want a positive pressure booth. I think you want fresh, filtered air be pushed into the room. This helps keep a positive pressure in the booth, pushing air out through a vent.

With your setup, if I understand it correctly, you are using the fans to suck the air out of the booth. This works good to get the fumes out, but it also sucks dust into the booth through any openings because of the negative presssure.

I'm sure a squirrel fan would work better than a box fan. That's what I'm going to get when I redo my booth.

If I'm wrong on the positive/negative pressure concept, please correct me.

The way I see it is, either way you are either pulling or pushing air into the booth. (Neg\Pos)

With my setup ...What I neglected to add is I have a series of filters on the top and on the bottom directly across the room from my S.C fan outlet.

So instead of having a fan blow it in , the S.C fan sucks it in from the other side..
....Ill tell you what......I found out real fast that I didn't have enough inlets filters when I started ...the D@~N thing imploded on me,
