hi,
im quite new here but i hope to learn a lot here since im new to spraypainting.
i have spray a couple of trailer frames ( truck trailer ) that is, i work in a mine truck rebuild shop as a mechanic and everynow and then i need to pick a paint gun. by no strech of the imagination am i a spraypainter, but the paint sticks on there with litle runs and has gloss.

my problem, i decided to paint a couple of panels on my 1968 hr pannelvan and bought surface and acrylic paint with matching thinners. i brought home a old anest iwata gun from work that we use for enamel, the tip says 2, cant figure out if that a size 2 or if that a 2 mm hole.and i have a poxy litle compressor that not suficicient it runs full bore! i have a problem with the surface, according to protec i should mix 1-1 surfacer-thinners but it doesnt seem to work, a ****y litle bitt will come out of the gun, unless i go 1-2.5 but then the surfacer is nearly see thro.i cleaned out my gun a couple of times and blows thinners out just fine ! im thinking of renting a bigger compressor tomorrow but i would hate to find out that the gun is the problem, i mean i have a fair bit of sanding back to do !my current compressor runs 120 ltr per minute ?
any ideas or sugestions?
thanks in advance mick

Is there an old filter still in the gun? Did you take the gun apart to clean it ? I have had to soak old guns in acetone to free all the old crap out of it before then rebuild it. although sometimes I get away with just soaking it. These are all just thoughts and suggestions.

would it be possible for the gun to work fine with normal enamel and have issieus with the surfacer because thats thicker ( well builds thicker)

ill go strip the unit and see from there, at work we normally use paint thinner to rinse / clean the guns but you reckon acetone ?
thanks mick

Acetone is stronger than paint thinner or reducer Rinsin the gun is good but you really need to take them all apart every once in a while to keep them in good spraying condition , I spray primer with a 1.6 SATA 100 B RP and it comes out fast. So if its a 2.0 tip that you have it should spray real well no problems its plugged up somewhere. Try this put some thinner in the cup and with out any air hooked up pull the trigger and see how the fluid comes out of the tip should be nice and round straight and come out about 2-4 inches from the gun (depending on how much Thinner is in the cup) if it goes to the side or barley comes out there is a flow issue.

take the nozzle off and check to see if there might be build up in it make sure the needle is clean and moves smoothly (also make sure it moves its full stroke out of the way when the trigger is pulled full open

all of thes suggestions are based on a gravity feed Gun (cup on top) If you have a sipon feed (cup on bottom) my guess would be an air leak / loose fittings causing vacuum loss and not being able to pull the Surfacer though the pickup tube, again check all air passages and make sure there is nothing plugging the way all it takes is a very small amount to screw it all up. thats why I suggested to take it all apart and soak it then blow out all passages and use a gun cleaning kit and make sure all passages are open.

update .....
so i had trouble with the surfacer, well as 1 of you pointed out it really was the gun, suction fed, the two nipples on the pot were leaking air lots, so i grabbed my second favorite gun from work wich was a top fed gun (pot on top)
my compressor wasnt really enough so i rented a bigger one and started two with the end coat..
my goodness is painting with acrylic paint different to industrial enemal..the mixture is so sensitive..i still dont know how to get the mix spot on but the paint started out coming dry out of the gun and so added more thinners and then had it wright.all in all this has been a very expensive excises but it feels like more, i can see how to get pretty good results with a bitt of training!!! but i will need that training !!

thanks all for your input it would have looked a lot different with out it !!
