Buying paint on the web

I am getting somewhat confused on what paint am going to need to buy. The resources on the websites for the manufacturer (PPG, HOK, Etc.) many times do not match up for item numbers on retail sites. Mixing colors or being able to even look at the base color is difficult. I can't find info on PPG base colors. Hok or somebody else put on the internet the HOK line of all there base products even additives so I am leaning to HOK just because I can find info on it. Can someone where I can find mixing info and such as well as retail paint sale on the web. I have only found one site that is clear enough for me to even consider purchasing the paint. Some sites I have seen a TXT file that is so vague it is ridiculous. Just like epoxy primer 1 and a price. Anywho, I got to this point when I called a place local to get HOK info and prices and they were treating me like a leper because I wasn't a shop. I am just bitchin' now so I will leave it at this. Please post info on the web that sells paint.

If you want HOK, try coastairbrush.com.
You can buy it in any size, 2,4,8,16,32 oz.
And autobodysupply.net has the tech sheets for HOK.
Good luck,

Well where are you from ? For me for example I am from the Netherlands and I will tell you that for example PPG the numbers are totally different form the ones sold in the States. I also tried to get me some paint from coastairbrush just to try Hok . A simple kit cost 155 and getting it here will cost me 100 extra just because it has to be packed special ( dont know the english word ).

Well, I have bought 3 systems to learn with. I got some cheap paint, and some expensive paint. First I have ICI Autocolor from basecoat to clear. The system ran $206.49. The dry time is insane compared to HOK. Nearly every process is 15-45 minutes flash and 24 to 48 hrs. useable cure (meaning the paint is hard enough to handle normally). I have no idea how it will last but for the price of the whole monkey it sure is a nice zoo to be in. Buff and polish was more of a pain that I had initially realized. Now I know why there are people that do this proffesionally. I may have a child but I am not that patient. I ended up letting my cousin buff and polish it and he did a good job. Next time I see the tank on the bike I will take some pictures. Anywho, I am going to be using the HOK system next and I feel like I am going to cry the tech sheets are drving me nuts to make a prep cheat sheet. The HOK total came out to be roughly the same @ 236.49. What I do not like is the difficulty of the system. I would swear there is a line in the tech sheets about checking Jupiters alignment with Mars. Well I will figure it out and have fun doing it. I am using a knockoff devilbiss HVLP gun from central pneumatic Professional. Even at a cost of $50 the gun seems well thought out and did a great job with a 1.6 mm spray head. I had forgotten the clean up is a bitch part of this type of work. Almost let it sit too long after spraying the basecoat. But I broke it down, soaked the head and blew thinner through until clear and it was good to put the clear on. This post is getting really long so I will close it down and let some discussion begin. I am having a lot of fun figuring this "magicians" craft. Geez all that and I did not even cover what I am. I am in Dallas, Tx. I decided to start doing this because I had a friend want to repaint his bike and I got a 95 XL I am rebuilding from being wrecked into a custom frame. The paint is probably considered a hazmat itam and entails international charges. I work for UPS and see those types of shipments all the time. Cheapest job I could find here that was good came in at $900.

I found the HOK system to be quite easy.
What do you find difficult?
The tech sheets do make it sound worse than it is.
If you have any ?'s I'll be glad to help.

What are you finding difficult about the system? I read a tech sheet once..I think...uhhh.....yeah, I read one once. All the systems (HOK, PPG, Doupont) are generally fool-proof if you follow a few rules:

1) Don't use one brand of paint and another brand of thinner...IT DONT WORK...buy the right reducer/thinner and use it CORRECTLY!

2) Always let your basecoat setup completely before spraying anything on it...it's only 5 min if you sprayed it the rigth thickness...if you don't wait...IT WONT WORK.

3) Use the right speed of hardener in your clear...if it's cold, use slow hardener, if it's hot, use fast hardener...dont try to use medium all the time...IT DONT WORK.

4) Always buy 25% more clearcoat than what you think you need...spray it all on the peice, then sand off your imperfections and buff it within 2 days. If you wait any longer than 4, IT WILL WORK, but it'll be harder than hell to buff.

5) The finished peice is a result of what you put into it...if you slop around the bodywork, or the first coat of basecoat or clear, the end will show it.

Hello again. The HOK as I last posted seemed difficult according to the tech sheets. Seemed difficult. I think what tripped me is the mixing I did with ICI and what I have to do with HOK. ICI was more difficult to mix but it was explained well in the tech sheets. Alot of 4:1:3 3 product mixing stuff. HOK is easier but more detailed on mixing so I felt like I was reading a manual. Autobodysupply.net helped me alot with what I needed in the I got it category. HOK is pretty much a 2 part system per se. The weather here has gotten so cold I can't spray until I build/find a place to spray. My cousin let me use his shop on a friends bike. But, after he started finding microscopic pieces of all phases of the paint on his snap-on stuff he went insane and told me,"Do not do paint here again!"

as he passed out. So I am patching it up with him cuz he is my bud and I get to mess with racing stuff I would never get to touch. Next up is my bike so I hope we get a 75 degree day sometime here in Texas. L8tr

Here is a site that has lots of info on PPG paints. It has the material safety data sheets and info on each line of paint. You can even look at color chips for the factory paint colors on the site. As far as the numbers being different, if you can order it through a shop in your area they should be able to find out the numbers you need if you give them the numbers that we use in the states.
