Ive always thaught candy was just a clear that was tinted so that it was colord but still transparent, is this right? then what is pearl? i seen on the how to section of the website about the ghost flames, that was nice, i may do that to a car in the spring, but im not sure what pearl and candies are, theres no one around here that really does anything like that, also i mainly use sikkens products and am very happy withthem but it seems like you all use ppg mainly and it seems alot cheaper than sikens so i may have to get some and give it a try, also can i make my own candys and pearls? by adding tint to a mat clear?

Yes,you can make both in your line,I believe Sikkens uses dry pearl but you can mix anyone's dry pearl in your basecoat clear. You're right on the candy,it's just color added to clear to tint it transparent,Ford's code E9 on Mustangs, etc is a good example. If you make a candy in your system do a test panel first, some tints won't work as well as others.Pearls are just colored polymer flakes similar to metallics, but they're smaller and a different shape to difuse light in more angles.Toyota's code 033 I think is a nice 3stage white pearl and the pearl mix is what I usually use but change the white base out for pure tinting white,it's blinding in the sun and doesn't get that yellow cast most have.I do know 90826 is PPG's # for the pearl mix,the code could be wrong and it might even be the Nissan color but the PPG is correct. It's nothing more than a little white and fine white pearl mixed in a ton of base clear.

ok thanks alot, so basically pearls just give the base a certain hugh (hew) to it?

and what would be the results in kandying a whole vehicle, would it still have depth even though its just one color and nothing to look into?

Re: can someone please explain what pearl and cand

i think what you're looking for is 'hue'? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bigokay.gif

the best way that i can describe pearls is that paints with pearl in it have sort of an incandescent, shimmering quality to it. they change how the paint reflects depending on the direction of the light source. candies out of the can (at least to my knowledge) don't have this quality.

does this sound right rex?

Hehe,I guess.I think if memory serves me incandescent is what the candies were refered to back in the 70's when I was still a snotnosed brat, but i'm not 100% sure on that. The pearls in the color give you a beautiful 'metallic' look or even a flop that's more subtle than plain metallic flake but it gives the color some pizzaz.Putting them over a color gives the final color outcome a shimmer that can be very subtle or ghosted or right in your face depending on the base color.Candies can be used over whatever you want, metallics give the most visual impact but they'll liven up a solid color too.A candy over a white base almost gives a neon effect but if you use say candy apple red over a solid red base it'll bring on a depth to the color that's something to be seen. That's how those old black lacquer jobs looked so deep-paint it black,a few coats of black milked down with clear and then clear it.Once it's done and buffed it's like you can reach down into it but it's just a plain old solid black.Ford has a red on Excursions(Navigators?) that's that way, code E8 I believe, but it's a sh!tty attempt by the factory to duplicate the candy over a solid red.Nice red but the 'candy' coat does nothing really to change the depth,I've blended the basecoat version (bc/cc) of the color on them and you can't tell any difference looking at it like you can E9,the true tri stage red metallic on the Mustangs and Navigators.
