Candy over bare metal?

I was looking at some of Harley's new limited edition tins you can buy from them, they have designs that appear to have candy over bare steel with machined patterns. They look very cool and I'd like to do it to my Harley, but I'm not sure about applying paint directly onto bare metal. I called SEM and asked them if it would work and the best I got was "Maybe." Has anyone done this with any success? Did an adhesion promoter work? What about mixing the candy into the clear? What I'd like to do is polish the tank, mask out flames and sand everything for a machined look except the flames.

Any advice for a noob is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Matt

Matt,
Welcome. Pretty cool effect. Been around for a while as the Screamin Eagles had this, but it was just clearcoated over.
In fact, I have one of the tanks in stock right now.
I know H-D had a problem with minor rust and the clear peeling off of it

Did you happen to read this recent post. Basically the same thing you are wanting to do.

Be sure your tank and fenders are in perfect condition.
