candy question

I'm painting some motorcycle tins. I want the color to look nearly black with a tint of blue when the sun hits it. I originally thought I could get away with using a straight black base then use blue candy over it, but I ran a couple test strips today and the blue was so faint that I could hardly see it. I tried 1-3 coats of the candy and they all look the same. then used some cut in clear over it. I also did a strip with metalic black as a base, and obviously the blue reflected off the metalic nicely, but I was trying to stay away from the metalic look. What are my options here. using martin senour

I would have said to use a black metallic as the base, but since you mentioned that you don't want any metallic in the job, the only way I can see this done is if you make a VERY dark solid gray. You can put just a tad bit of white into your black. Then spray your candy and clear over this.
OR, since you are wanted an overall color with no depth like candy has, just make up a dark solid blue by taking black and adding some solid blue.

Pearls will achieve the same thing as the metallic, only the pearl will be finer in sparkle, BUT it will still have some sparkle.

thanks taz

I should have known that candy over straight black wldnt have worked... I guess I'm gonna try the pearl. Plan is black base, covered by a coat of white pearl, covered by the blue candy....this sound like a good choice?

Hmmm, Try this. Take a VERY LITTLE bit of blue pearl and add it to the black. Dip your paint stick in this and see if this is what you were wanting to achieve
If not, try spraying this mix, then coating it with candy. Either way will give you a very fine sparkle due to the pearl instead of metallic.

I've done this before using a blue pearl toner from a mixing machine. Then adding this to the black and spraying it. Gives you a black out of the sun, but a very dark blue in the sun.

Use a charcol base, it will save you the time from using a pearl, white pearl, over black, same out come. Build your color to desired depth. Hyndai 04 has a nice one with no metallic.
