I want to paint my cobra mustang for an up coming car show. I saw a really cool look on a H.D. bike, it had checker board showing with tear away edges and 3 colors of flames over the checker design. How is the black and white design taped off??? Thanks

See if you can get ahold of Craig Frasiers first Cheap Tricks and FX book. He has a step by step checkered flag project. AL

Hey, I tried something last night that worked GREAT, reall cool to build my checker board design . One side of the car is done , took about 2 hours total. Here is a step by step-
1 My Cobra is red so I sucffed an area over the rear wheel .
2 Shot 3 coats of white base coat and when flashed, 2 coats of inter clear.
3 when dried, using 3/4" masking tape, put down 3 strips right next to each other, then pulled the middle strip up and moved it to the right of strip 3, making strip 2, now strip 4. This was for spacing purposes only. Next put down strip 5 and move 4 to position 6, Continue adding a strip spaced 3/4" by the strip that I kept moving.
4 Finally had a 12" area left to right.
5 Starting at the top do the same thing coming down.
6 shot 3 LIGHT coats to avoid heavy edge build
7 When dried , pulled tape and re layed tape pattern over the painted areas, because what you end up with is only half the checker pattern. after re taping horizontal and vertical areas shot 3 light coats, and when dried I had a perfect checker board. Total time approx 2 hours and 1/2 roll of tape.
Tonight I am doing the other side and will document with digital pictures if any interest.
Enjoy! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Great idea! What colors are your checkers? You said you have a red car and shot white as a base. Isn't white one of your checker colors? To save even more time spray your base the same color as one of your checkers and then you only have to tape and spray once. Sorry if I'm not reading you correctly.
Regards,
Mike

I have posted a semi- finished pic of the checker board in current projsect, along with a pic of the hood that I did last year.
