checkerboard question

I am going to paint a kandy blue job on my harley with the checkerboard design. Am I right in assuming that I apply the bc, Kandy, then clear then do the checkerboard (pearl flake mixed in clear), then the final clear. I am confused in the order and after reading some older posts I am worried about thickness.

THanks

Actually, there are a few different ways you can do it. You can do it the way you mentioned (base, candy, clear, checkerboard, reclear). You can also go without the first clearing if you scuff the candy up good. Don't do too much sanding on this though.

You can also alter the basecoat, and do the checkerboard under the candy.

You can also base, candy, then do the checkerboard, then dust a couple more coats of candy in the checkerboard area, then clear.
