checkerboards on repair job

excellent job on the repair you truly have a gift for painting in general as well as the art of flames. my question for you is how exactly did you do the ghosted checker board pattern. I don't understand how to achieve that look.

Actually, this was my first time, so to start with, I new the guy used 3/4" so I figured out the easiest way to do this.
