Checkered Flag Flames

For my next trick I'd like to put checkered flag squares inside of my flames. I can only come up with laying down blue fine line tape in alternating strips and cutting out the extra squares needed to make it a checker board. Is this the only way? Any secrets? Tricks?

i dont even use the fine line on this one. lay your masking tape one way then run it the opposite and then just carefully cut the alternating squares using the second layer of tape only as a guide and removing it, this way your checkers will all be the same size. when cutting be careful not to cut too deep and score the under color. spray the lighter color first and then the darker of the two, you will get less of a tape edge when you remove the tape.

I use the same method when painting checker boards. Lay the masking tape over the other one and cut out the overlapped squares. It's great for doing them at angles too. Try clearing your base before taping off your graphics, that way your less likely to cut into the base. Also keeps the edges down.
