What is best for cleaning the oil off of fresh parts ? I just received some bike parts and they have a pretty heavy coating of oil on them.

Also what is a good cleaner for wiping down parts that have been touch/handled during painting ?

Thanks.

I got a 5 gallon bucket of solvent at my PPG dealer for 19 bucks. They recommended it for cleaning guns and real greasy surfaces, but not for final paint prep. Can't remember what the name of it was, but your paint dealer can no doubt recommend some for you.

When you prepare your surface for paint, you should use a better cleaner. The PPG guys sold DX320 to me. It evaporates quickly and completely. It's more expensive than the other stuff, so I use it only for this application. I'm cheap, ya know!

I wipe the surface off with a rag wet with cheap thinner first, but if it's really caked on just a dry rag first.Once it looks pretty clean from the thinner wipes I go to DX330.This is DX320s predecessor and stays wet much longer.A few wipes with this and she's clean. On complicated pieces or getting into cracks and crevices I just pour 330 in my gun and start hosing the area to flush it out where I gan get to it.If it's really bad do the thinner first too.

Thanks for the info.

But what do ya do about the inside of gas tanks ? That is if you seal them. I've just been trying different degreasers each time with a little water and shaking the heck out of them. Then flushing them out with a hose and doing it over until they feel clean. Of course I can only feel up to a few inches inside the tank so I don't know how clean it really is.

If you're wanting to seal inside new tanks,I'd talk to someone that does it.I'd think a qt of thinner in each tank 1/2 would clean it well enough for their prep, but ask to be sure.
