Arthur, i usally have two clear coating sessions on a flame job, there are exceptions though. after the flame work is done 4 -5 coats, let dry for a day wet sand with 600 grit then reclear 3 -4 coats wet sand and buff. this should take care of almost any paint edges.

Arthur,You might want to put 1 coat of clear after your base (before you lay out your flames)If you make a small mistake painting your flames, you can lightly wipe it off with reducer and not ruin your base coat.

if your gonna go that route you should spray 3 coats and wet sand with 600 grit wet so your art work comes out that much flatter and sharper. i usally use intercoat clear for this you get the protection with out the urethane build. remeber too much build is not healthy for a custom paint job.
