Clear Coat Help !!

I have a week's worth of art on a gas tank. Shot it with a clear on Saturday, but was in a hurry (never a good thing). When prepping for paint, I always use clean paper towels for wax and grease remover. But, I was out of towels and being in a hurry I used what I thought was a clean rag. Turned out, it was just washed with grease / armorall rags and is causing me a LOT of issues. I ended up with quite a bit of fish eye's in my clear. I have let it cure, sanded with 600 grit as far as I dare go, and was planning on spraying another coat of clear over the top to try and get rid of the fish eyes.

I used a catalized PPG clear over Auto-air paint. Has anyone done this? Will this work? or, is there something else I should be doing. I have never had issues with fish eyes and I am lost on this one.IMG_20110911_115503 (Large).jpg Any help would be appreciated.

Use a good wax and grease remover with clean towels . Wipe on / wipe off while wet with different towels . One to apply and one to dry . Do this before you sand and after you wet sand . Check with your clear coat manufacturer and see if they have a fish eye eliminator to add to the clear . Follow their directions . Apply a dry coat coat to start out with , followed by a medium coat , then wet . Keep checking for fisheyes , as you apply the coats . Good luck .

Well, I shot the new clear coat tonight. I wet sanded with 600 grit, prepped with wax and grease remover (using paper towels), tack rag, then using fish eye eliminator, I sprayed two dry coats, a medium coat, and two wet coats. Fisheyes are gone. just a very slight dip where they used to be. These will easily be sanded out. I am planning on wet sanding with 800, striping, then a final coat of clear.

Good to hear you got them out. Those weren't fisheyes, those were 'grouper eyes'.
Probably took a lot of sanding and quite a bit of clear. If you still see the 'dip' you should have enough clear that you can sand it flat now and reclear one more time. You may want to let it sit a couple days before adding even more clear though. Looks like you did some good airbrushing on there!

I wanted to wait a while before I sanded the whale eyes. I took 600 grit and sanded last night. Only two or three very small fish eyes remain. I striped it last night and will be shooting the final clear on it later today or tomorrow. Looking back, it almost would have been easier to start over. But, I'm glad I was able to save it.
