Clear coat options

Hi I am new angain d have been painting small car part interiors for a short time now and have been doing ok so far but was recently talked into paintng a whole car - lucky for me it is a small 3 door car... I have done all the prep worlk ok sanded back the clear and filled in any imperfections sanded and then high fill primed sanded again - have now base coated yesterday and then started to clear it - which is were I have come to my problem - I had a few large areas were the clear had not covered smoothly (major orange peel ) so I have sanded it back to an almost totally flat surface - the way I see it is that I have a choice I can either reapply the clear again or continue wet sanding and down to 2000 grit -

I have not had a lot of luck with the wetsanding and polishing in the past.

If I reclear after I have sanded it and cleaned it down the surface is quiet dull and hazy if I reclear will it come back to a nice shine, or should I throw another coat of colour on it?

any help here would be terrific

regards christine

If you have wetsanded with 2000 and you can get it fairly flat and all dull, AND you feel you still have enough clear left, you can go ahead and machine buff the car out.
When you have a lot of orange peel, you tend to have to remove quite a bit of the clear in order to get it flat.

OR, if you would like to just go ahead and reclear, you can wetsand with 800 or 1000 wet and reclear the car again.
2000 is too fine to reclear over.
If you go with this option, be sure and be very carefull using the 800 or 1000 grit as these will take off even more clear faster than the 2000 did.

To answer your question, yes, the clear will bring back the shine on the above grits.

Thanks for the reply - I have only used 800 at the moment just in case I do re-clear the 800 just knocked the top off it still has a few dimples left... but I think I will just reclear it again - I have never had any real joy from wet sanding and then polishing it up and for me and my lack of knowledge it may be a safer option due to if I do reclearing - I always seem to get some sort of contaminents in there.

Just a last question how long should I leave the clear to fully dry/vent before reaplying clear?

I am using MIPA which seems to cure quickly -

I'm not for sure of your weather or the dry times of the paint. But normally you could reclear the next day, if the clear feels soft (do a hard thumb print test), then I would give it a couple more days before clearing.

Good luck on the reclear!
Take your time, have good lighting, and be sure and use a good clean gun.
