Clear coat peeling

I just painted a motorcycle helmet to practice ghost flames technique. I am using Sherwin Williams paint. I scuffed the original paint, put down the black base coat, wet sanded the base coat, put a coat of clear and then wet sanded that. The problem started after I painted the ghost flames and the clear coat started coming off with the tape. Once it started from taking the tape off, it peeled like an onion.

On another board, An ex-Sherwin rep said your not supposed to sand thier base.Anytime I sand a base coat,i always put down another dust coat, just to be sure.

You might have let the base dry too long. The base loses it's adhesion properties after a certain time, usualy about 24 hours.
If you go past thsi, you can spray a coat of adhesion promoter to help prevent this.

Usually I'll let the basecoat dry for about 5-10 minutes tops before clearcoating.

i use sherwin williams and what jim stated is true. you are not suppose to sand the sherwin base coat. i has a parifin base and sanding screws with the adhesion. also, do not let the base sit for longer than a day or two. sherwin says that if you let it sit too long you need to completely removed the sprayed base and start over.

did the clear stick better to the base, and peel like an onion over the parts that was previously painted and clearcoated?

is it a warner clear?

I agree with Jim too.I don't know Squirly Williams but usually if you do sand basecoat you're supposed to put another coat over it.It sounds like your base isn't supposed to be sanded period, which kind of sucks.

I had the same problem w/ my sherman (squrily) williams clear, but it peeled like an onion over the portions of the tank that there wasn't base coat on.

for example. i had a helmet to paint, and i wanted to keep the original color as my base. So, i sanded the clear that was on it w/ some 1000 grit, taped my graphix, painted, then cleared. I waited 24hrs, i then wanted to add a second graphic. So, i taped the next graphic on, when i pulled the tape for the second graphic, the clear pulled up w/ it. not so much where i had the 24hr old graphic, but all around the first graphic.

The reason I say this is because,I think newbies have more trouble starting out with this than other brands. If you follow the directions, yes you can get good results. It seems the top brands are more foregiving to flash times, adhesion, temps etc.Jim

i agree w/ ya, the more i get into it, the more you find out.

as a newbie, i was spraying everything. I would have been into a lot of money if i wouldn't have found the cheeper stuff.
