Clear coat question on fire dept. tools

A little over a year ago our firehouse burned down and we were able to recover some items. We are building a memorial wall in the station with tools and other recovered equipment. The items are still soot covered and we would like that to remain for character. Can we clear coat these items soot coated and will it stick? If not what other options do we have?
Thanks,

Sure, as long as they are not completely covered with a thick layer, I don't see why not.
In fact, I've seen it done before where you use a torch and purposely add designs with soot over a paint job, then clearcoat over it.

Had a question on that before on this forum
