clear coat redo

My son just aquired a 94 Dodge Dakota that is black and some of the clear coat is coming off. My question is can I just sand the clear coat some and then reshoot the clear? What about where the clear is now gone and the base coat is exposed. I don't want to put alot of time or money into it, just make it look nicer for him to drive. Thanks

probably not. you'll need to shoot black again and reclear the pannel.

i don't think you'll be able to get rid of the clearcoat edge, and it'll show up in the final clear.

black's not too expensive.

i usually test things by getting them soaked in water. if you see the edge of the clear line, you will definitly see it in the final clear. water will magnify it, but the clear coat will magnify things even more and show mistakes and blimishes.

another option is to refinish the problem panel with a urethane single stage, usually a little cheaper than bc/cc. if your going to fix it at all, you should go ahead and do it right or it will just come back to haunt you later and you will have to redo it. cheaper to do it right, once.

I agree with onelowxa , If you want to get it done cheap and easy, just do it in a single stage.

You should be able to get the complete truck done for about $500 or so?!
