Im clearing then sanding then clearing again. My question is does all the shiny spots have to been gone before I clear the second time around? Ive been breaking through in some spots trying to get them all out. Thanks for the help! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/drink.gif

you need to sand any drips, runs, or dirt out. It helps to smooth out any orange peel. If the surface is nice, and for some reason you are adding multiple coats of clear with sanding in between (???) then you can just scuff the clear with a green pad to tooth it. Dare I ask why you are clearing then sanding then clearing again??? The hardest paper I'd use to sand clear would be wet-sand with 600g, and that's ONLY if I was spraying several more coats of clear over the top of that as a finish coat.

Im laying flames, I cleared then let dry and hit it with 800 then was clearing again to get rid of that edge. I had always thought you had to get rid of ALL the shiny spots. So its ok to leave some and clear again as long as its scuffed right?

I would not sand between clearings, just put on 3 or 4 coats and then sand it all down. If you are going to put on one coat at a time, you are going to break thru constantly, especially if you are trying to get all the low spots out.

Well Ive been putting two good coats on but when I try and get ALL the shiny spots out I break through in some spots, only a few. So if I miss some spots Ill be ok right?

it may be too late, but just spray 3-4 coats, and wet sand it with 800 or 1000g. Carefully, especially around edges where you will cut through in a flash. it's hard to see how much sanding you have done until the surface is dry, wipe it down periodically to check your progress. You just need to knoock the surface down, you do not have to remove every tiny shiny dot. Just cut it down some. i wish I could explain better than that, but that's all I can come up with!!!

The easiest thing to do is sand down all the easy areas to level everything out and stay a good 1/4" off the edges-any edge.Once that's done grab a grey or gold(brown) scuffy and wet scuff everything else.If you do it right there will be no shiny spots and no breakthroughs.Just remember the sharper the edge the faster you break thru but for the most part it wont stick if it's still shiny.

I shouldn't be saying this but there is a recoat window that you don't need to resand,PPG runs 72hrs at 70 degrees I think for clears. It will work but it's not the ideal thing to do.If you've ever had to work on cars with factory repaints this is what they do but the paint will not feather out between the layers. It sticks but......
