Clearing over decals????/

Did a search and came up with nothing.... I know it has had to have been covered before, but I can't find it.

Anyway, I have a sportbike owner that is talking about wanting his decals under clear. I have never even attempted it.

Is there a special way to do this?? I assume you don't want to scuff the decal up first........ Do you spray light coats of clear and then a heavy one or what??? I thought about spraying several light coats, letting it dry overnight and lightly scuffing it, then going with the heavy coats like I usually do.

HELP!!!!!!! Any advice appreciated! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beat.gif

I'd go with the light coats let dry
then the heavy coat. i've done mountain bike
Helmets befor and i have got away with a light
scuff on the decals i used 1500 to 2000 wet sandpaper and they
turn'd out fine.

Make sure they are thicker decals/stripes/graphics so they don't bubble on your real easily. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/luck.gif

I cant think of the web site but there is a link from the Chrome Diva web site that sells decals and talks about how to paint over them. If you cant find the site I will try and find it again

I don't think I would scuff the decal. It is easy to hit the edge and tear the decal or bury grey fuzz into the edges. Ureathane will burn itself into the decal well enough for good adhesion. If anything, spray a light coat of adhesion promoter. I would start with by 3-4 medium/wet coats of clear and wetsand the whole job with 600-800 until all of the edges around the decal have been flatenned. Shoot 1-2 over reduced flow coats, sand with 1500-2000 and polish. The key is getting rid of any edges, so the decals appear to be painted on. If you use applicator fluid or water to apply the decals, let them dry a few days in the sun before spraying anything over them. Of course you want to be certain the decals you use are ureathane compatible. Have fun!
