clearing over vinyl logo\'s

what is the best way to clear over a vinyl logo...say,a Harley-Davidson decal on the side of the tank? is the vinyl compatable with clear urethane? been painting for 30 yrs and never had to do that yet... just wondering,I could experiment I guess.

If it's the factory decal there shouldn't be a problem, but there are a few decals that will bubble.I take a white scuffpad with water and scuff it.These white ones have soap in them so you have to rinse it well when done.If the factory already cleared it in use a grey Scotchbrite with water. You don't want to sand it because it's easy to break through the edge and burn the color off the decal.

I usually use a rattle can of adhesion promoter from the local PPG distributor. Clear and invisible, a light dusting over the logo, and then hit it with the clear. I have done large graphics on Japanese sportbikes in the same fashion, and it always works like a charm!!!

clearing over factory reproduction stickers is not usually too bad. They are thin and a lot of factory jobs are cleared over the stickers already. Make sure you get the air bubbles out from behind them.
If you want to go over the vinyl stickers you get from the fairs and car shows it sometimes causes problems. I have had them lift from the adhesive reacting to the clear. I've also had wrinkling problems with the vinyl. Could have been cheap vinyl or a reaction to the clear.

hummm........ interesting.......

I have never had this problem (thankfully)! I have a local sign shop that reproduces vinyl letters and decals and such, and I just apply them, get 'em flat, spray a little adhesion promoter on them, and clear them, no probs!

How many coats of clear do you usally have to use with vinyl graphics underneath?

depends if it matters if you can "feel" them under the clear. If it does not matter to you that you will feel the border of the graphic, one coat will work.....

Use 180 grit to score the surface, when you break through then use thinner to disolve it. finish it with 320 then prime it. You will never see the edge after your paint shrinks 4 to 6 months later. If you get paid good money and sign it, do it right. There are no short cuts in custom paint. <font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">If you don't do it right, someone else can.
