Clears and Isocyanates...

Good point. I don't use a air supplied hood, but I should. I've been thinking that the whole rig for it would be too expensive (hood, hose, special compressor) , but I wonder how much a lung is going for these days...

I have a 3M rep coming out sometime soon so I can demo a self contained unit with the full hood.

I'll let you know how it goes. I like this one especially because you do not have to have the extra hose.

We have a SATA fresh air system at work. It doesn't use a seperate compressor, it just has additional filters in line, and on your belt. I have both full hood, and half mask, that are fresh air supplied. Personally I use the fresh air half mask (don't like looking through that d*mn sheild).

So some time back a poll was posted checking what type of respirator folks used and if I remember correctly most people were using a half-face respirator with two charcoal cartridges....

After reading Kosmo's books and some other really scary stuff on Isocyanates on the 'Net, I was just wondering if anybody else out there was worried about the future health of their lungs?

As far as I can determine, all the major paint manufacturers use Isocyanates in their catalyst for their clears. Anybody take any special precautions? Favorite brand of respirator? Anybody use a full-face with cartridges?

seems like it would be easy enough to make a fresh air supply. I have not tried yet, but I am thinking an old hair dryer on cool (in the summer anyway) and a couple of old vacuum hoses hooked up to the filter mask. My ol' lady complains when I spend $50 for paint let alone $1200 for air! I guess my lungs have a low price tag in her book :) I know the hose would be a pain, but until people start paying me the big bucks, I have to use cheap stuff in my garage.

Has anyone tried this yet?

BTW this is a great site.

I have been using some Iso free 1 part acrylic clear from U-pol seems to work quite well and transtar do an iso free primer as well. Both fairly cheap as well

I have a Hobby Air which has a full hood and comes with its own turbine. Check out Spry Gun Depot. You can get one for under 6 bills. Also if in doubt read the manufactures MSDS sheet which they have to supply and it will tell you what is in the paint, what organs it will damage and what protective measures to take. I had a friend who painted semis and did not believe in safety, he didnt live to see 50. Theres bold painters and old painters but not old bold painters, forgot where I heard that one, must be the isocyanates! AL

I can't remember the exact name of mine, I think it is SAS or something, but it has a facemask that covers my chin and over my eyebrows.

I don't know how I ever painted without it.

SprayGun Depot. Also North makes a respirator (full face) that has a belt unit that you can use with a regulator and a hose from your compressor. I like the HobbyAir because it comes with its own turbine which can be set outside the booth and supply air that hasnt come from the compressor tank. Tool Paradise may also sell them Al

And ?

Did you try the hair dryer/vacuum hose setup? Did it work?

I wonder why no followup post here?

:think1:Maybe it didn't work and the isocyanates got him?

I bought one off e-bay for about $350. Search "Fresh air respirator" its called Breathe-Cool. It has a hose but once you get used to it it works well. I never smell any fumes with it.
