Does anybody do old school cob webbing these days? It's not very popular like it was 35 years ago. I use a binks #7 to spray it what do you use? Thanks for a great site! RS

I've only done it a few times. Definitely don't' see it like you used to.

I can't remember what gun I was using though. I remember I did the inside of a boat one time. Looked pretty cool.

Glad you are enjoying the forum!

Does anybody know how to make the webbing look thicker? I've tried both gravity feed and Binks #7 guns and it doesn't change. Instead of looking like a thread you sew a button on with I want it to look like binding twine!!

Well in the good ole days, this effect was done with the lacquer paints. Sometime the guys left the lid off the can to thicken it up a little. Which resulted in thicker webs, and the binks #7 was used by many for this effect. Hope this will help a ittle. Don't forget to show us some photos.

Yes that was the good ol days for sure,no money,no job and no clue! Hey its the good ol days again! Brian I was checking to see if anyone knew of a different gun that may get the webbing thicker.I took lids off the lacquer back in 1975 and the paint would get so thick it poured like gear lube but with the Binks #7 it still sprayed the webbing kinda thin.So much has changed in the painting world since I started in 1973.Thanks ,Rick

Hi Rick, there is a guy that is still in to the lacquer's, he's never left them. I'll check with him and see what he's using for a gun. I'll get back to ya, on it

Here ya go rick. This is how this guy does it. Sounds as though it's goin to take some playin with technique.
I use a siphon feed gun.....lacquer with no thinner(some work better than others)....light bright colors on a darker background show up better..
Close the fan down all of the way....open the paint knob at least a full turn....lower the air pressure until it will barely pulls the paint out..
Shoot a test panel before you ever try to web the project.....stand about 3 feet away.... shoot the webbing at an angle while quickly moving the gun sideways
(this gives the most stretched out pattern)....it will only take a quick pull of the trigger to produce strings of webbing...
Try shooting from different angles, to get more dramatic patterns.
If you need finer webbing, close the paint knob ....OR add thinner ...OR raise the air pressure.
Clear the webbing then block flat. Otherwise the webbing will sink later.
Siphon feed guns work the best ,binks #7

Closing the fan down is something new.I'll try that method.Thank you for all your help Brian.I've been playing around with this old school stuff because I'm getting ready to paint my 67 camaro black with white stripes but the stripes will be valspar base with rainbow flake lightly over the white then I want to web over the flake then clear.I've done some test panels last weekend also I sprayed some black vreeble over some white lacquer base and cleared it with valspar polyurethane. So far so good?? I might have to email you pictures so you can post if that's ok? Thanks again,Rick

Good luck on your project, sounds like you got it pretty well nailed. Sure helps doing test panels, doesn't it. Yep post up some photos when you get it completed. Would like to see them.

I was also going to say turn down the fan so it's more like a spray can type pattern and also turn down the pressure to about 20 lbs.

:luck:

I've never tried this, but I wonder if house paint would work? It's thick and doesn't need to be clearcoated...
