compound question

this may be a stupid question, but i need to ask it....i've done the wet sanding on a tank...first i used 1200 and block to smooth out the flame lines then sanded the entire tank with 2000...i was ready to buff with 3m microfinishing compound and i started to look at the compound...then i felt it...seems that the compound is more abrasive than the 2000...so is it necessary to use it or go to the 3m machine glaze....like i said this may sound crazy....maybe the compound is finer than the 2000....any help out there would be appriciated...pa

It feels gritty but as it works it breaks down and gets finer.

That's one of their courser compounds but dont worry,it does break down and it's only used to cut out the sandscratches. If the clear has sat long you'll be glad you had a courser cut.Once the scratches are cut out go to the polish on a black waffle pad to cut out the compound swirl marks and hand glaze it.

i did a test panel where i sanded the cc with 2000 and on one area i did the 3m microfinidhing compound, the machine glaze and hand glaze...the other area i just used the machine glaze and hand glaze...i see no difference. both look great...pa

The difference is speed. The compound will cut the scratches out quicker then the glaze. If you try the glaze only on cured paint you could warp the panel from too much heat trying to get the scratches out.
