compressors and CFM

What's the relationship to the CFM rating on a compressor and the CFM requirements for a gun. I understood the CFM was the compressors ablitity to keep up with the requriement of the gun as in "make compressed air". Therefore, for short bursts, like a motorcycle tank, over doing it on the gun was OK if you allowed time between coats to let the compressor catch up. As long as the regulator says 40 PSI, (or what ever you set), you should be OK. It's when the regulator drops below what you set that trouble begins. True or False?

Yeah.As long as you can maintain inlet pressure at the gun you're fine.If the compressor needs to catch up when it drops it need to be when you're done with a coat and can wait, you dont want it to happen while you're still sraying.
