Conventional Gravity Feed Gun Recommendation?

Can any of you seasoned painters recommend a new gun for me?
I've been doing body work and artwork for awhile now while my father does the actual spraying. This spring, I want to learn how to spray. My dad uses a Devilbiss JGA 502 Conventional Suction Feed gun right now. He and I are going to split the cost of new gravity feed gun. We're just hobbyists but we do want good equipment. Most of the paint we spray is HOK. We use the pearls, shimrin bases, and kandys. We've also used some of the smaller metalflake in our paint also. I'm giving you this info so you know what we'll be spraying through it. We'll probably use another gun for our primer.
He definately likes his Devilbiss gun...so maybe they make one that we'd like? We are open to any suggestions though.
Thanks!

I love the DeVilbiss Plus with a 1.3 tip but it comes with a 1.2,1.3 and 1.4.It will set you back $400 if you shop around and maybe a little less. It's not an HVLP but it is compliant to HVLP state's guidelines. The GFG is also a good gun for the money but I think a 1.4 tip is the smallest you can get without ordering one separate.Everyone likes Satas but they are very expensive to rebuild and retip.

Will I be able to shoot the paints I'm using now? What tip size for that gun is appropriate for kandies? How about flake?
Thanks for your time.

Just bought the Plus gun he is talking about, and really like it. I am going to try th e 1.4 tip for my clears, as the 1.3 made me move too slow.

Try tool paradise .com, they have good prices.

You should be able to shoot whatever you are shooting now.

Thanks... I've found them as low as $299. Seems like a pretty reasonable price for a quality gun.

LS,I thought the same thing when I swapped them but now I'd never go back to the 1.4,the 1.3 will break it up just that extra little bit that the speed doesn't bother me now.

KX,where are you finding these, and are they the whole kit with tips or just one tip setup?I want another but I won't pay for another set of tips.

I checked out where LudicrousSpeed suggested...toolparadise. I just ordered one for $289.00 with shipping. It comes with everything...the three tips and some extras.
I've never used cup liners...are they nice to have?

cup linners are the best thing since sliced bread less mess less thinner to clean guns

We've never had a gravity feed gun to mess with so I'm curious how the liner fits in.
Can't wait to try it out! Thanks for the help everyone!

I bought the liners for mine, but didn't use them for the only job I have done so far. I was doing an overall repaint on a car and figured that trying to refill the cup that often with a liner would be a PITA.

Small jobs would probably be great, though.

The only reason I commented about the speed of trying to shoot the clear with the 1.3 was that my arm almost could not take it by the time I got done with the roof. I was hurting!!! LOL That full cup gets heavy!

Hehehe,it does get heavy if you start up top,eh?The liners are great but they're more for a cup's worth when you need to spray upside down like scooter parts, they're a major pain to do a car with. All you need to do to use them is stick one in the cup(and 2mil sandwich bags work just as good) and set up a tip in the tool and poke it through into the feed hole.Fill the bag with paint, zip it shut, and when you get ready to spray turn the gun upside down and pull the trigger, once the material comes out you have a vaccumed cup to spray anyway you want without spitting.Refilling is a major pain so if it's something you think you'll really need look into the 3M cup system, they're about $1.50 a whack but very convenient. The prob with the DeVilbiss system is you can't buy the nipples without buying a pack of bags and the nippled can't be reused much.

What kind of air pressure are most of you shooting at when using this gun?

I run between 40 and 50 on clears depending which clear it is.With PPG's 2042 or 2021 it's around 42-45 and with 2002 I'm right at 50.Haven't used it for base but I'd say 40 is a good starting point. My GFG base gun likes to run at just under 40.
