cutting 3m tape for flames

I did some customs and ran into a problem of cutting to deep and scratch the paint surfice, How can I aviod this and masking tape residue shows up always on the first coats of clear, auto motive painting, is there a diiferent clear masking I can use and where on the net can i find a supplier of such things. Thanks

Automask is available from one of the airbrush sites listed elsewhere here and is supposed to be good.I use the green 233+ masking tape because it's thinner and a new blade with light pressure works great.1/4" masking tape simplifies it too.If your tape is leaving bad tracks it's because you're base isn't dry enough yet.Faint tracks will show up but dissappear on the first coat of clear.Are you blowing a coat of interclear down before taping?
