Difference in paints?

Hi everyone-

I am doing a flame job on my piece of junk bike but I would still like it to look nice. I went and got the PPG base coat and spent about $50 on a quart of paint and reducer. Before I go and spend another $100 on more colors for the flames I thought I'd ask this question-

Could I use regular enamel and then use the PPG clear coat? Would it still look OK, what would be the disadvantage? If I could get 90% there and save a lot of money I would rather do that, but if will end up looking crappy after all this work I would rather spend the $$$.

I appreciate your help...

you have PPG base coat. you want to use Enamel? and use PPG clear which is eurathane. You should pick 1 system and stick with it or else you are looking for head aches. How do you want to use the enamel? Are you refering to the Base Coat as enamel? Urethane and Base coat Clear coat are 2 diffrent paint systems.

i think you need to explain what you are trying to do in more detail so we can get you on the right track.

OK,

My total inexperience has obviously come through

; I was afraid I was unclear. Thanks for the effort EZRIDER...

I used the PPG basecoat. Now I am going to paint the flames. To try to save some $ I was wondering if I could use "regular" airbrush paint from the art store. I was assuming, probably incorrectly, that that was enamel.

Then to get the gloss, I was going to do a clearcoat of PPG paint.

I hope this clarifies my question somewhat. It sounds like from EZRiders response that this would be a bad idea and I should stick to using all PPG paints.

I would appreciate further input however.
Thanks-

I would say no,but there are airbrush paints that are compatible. That's not my gig so I can't help you there. If you're spraying more than a couple ounces an airbrush is small for the job.It might cost a few $ more but the base is the way to go.Reading through some posts here will give you an idea of the nightmare mixing things will cause.

IN NEW ZEALAND THE WORD ENAMEL MEANS SINGLE PACK PAINT THAT IS GLOSSY WITHOUT CLEAR.
BUT OUR ENAMEL CANT REALLY BE RECOATED WITH ANY ELSE BUT ITSELF.
NEVER TRY AND PUT BASECOAT OVER IT ELSE IT WILL MELT INTO IT AND DESTROY THE ENTIRE PAINT.
I WOULD DEFINATELY USE THE SAME SYSTEM RIGHT THROUGH .THE COST IS PART OF THE JOB AND CANT REALLY BE AVOIDED .
IF IWERE YOU AND WANTED FLAMES I WOULD AVOID ENAMELS ALTOGHER AND USE BASECOAT AND URETHANE CLEARS

Thanks alot people.

I guess I'm going to stick to the base/clear system. I'll let you know how it turns out but I'm sure I'll have more questions before I'm through.

Thanks again-
